6 Foot Festival
The 6 Foot Festival is an annual Indigenous arts and culture event organized by the Debajehmujig Storytellers, a First Nations theatre and multi-arts organization based on Manitoulin Island, Ontario. The festival celebrates land, art, and food, and its name comes from its original concept: artists creating works within a six-foot cube. Over time, it has expanded to include diverse art forms such as:
- Visual installations (sculpture, painting, mixed media)
- Performances (storytelling, music, dance)
- Workshops (e.g., watercolour, traditional crafts)
- Culinary experiences
- Fashion shows and cultural ceremonies
Seed Swap
The Debajehmujig Seed Swap is an annual community event that celebrates land-based knowledge, cultural traditions, and sustainability through seed sharing and educational activities. The event supports the exchange of heirloom seeds, promotes biodiversity, and encourages sustainable practices.
- Seed swapping: Bring seeds to trade with others.
- Workshops and presentations: Topics include planting strategies, wildflower propagation, agroecology, and cultural approaches to land stewardship.
- Sharing circle: Discussions on regenerating lands and waters, often led by local knowledge keepers.
- Arts and entertainment: Live music, visual arts (e.g., silk-screening), and performances by local artists.
- Community feast: A free lunch featuring locally inspired dishes.
Multi Year Training Programm
The Multi Year Training Programm is a unique process for creating new works. It recognizes that as humans, we create with our entire being—our physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual selves—and supports the development of the storyteller in all four of these areas. This work is adapted to the skills and intuitions of artists, nurturing honesty more than accuracy and sharing more than starring.
